Cutting 76 x 80 King mattress to fit in RV

For those of you that know me, I LOVE/NEED my sleep! When asked what is my “guilty pleasure”, my response is always NAPS! 😊

That being said, one of the key features we sought in selecting which RV to purchase was bed size. I adore my man but both of us will openly and freely acknowledge we are not snugglers – we each like our own sleeping space. So, when we found an RV offering a king-size mattress – done!

Here began the conundrum…a short while ago, Jason and I invested in a high-dollar memory foam king mattress for use in our sticks and bricks home. The problem is, that mattress measured 76” x 80” – the RV space requires a 70” x 80” mattress. Knowing the mattress supplied with the RV would not hold a candle to our current mattress, we had a decision to make. Sell (and lose a ton of money) the current mattress and purchase a new 70” x 80” memory foam for the RV. OR cut (yes, you read that correctly – CUT) 6 inches off the current mattress.

What did we decide? You got it – we’re gonna CUT! We gathered the necessary tools – a carpenter square, tape measure, box-cutter, sharpie, and (drum roll) an electric carving knife. Jason gingerly began cutting the mattress cover to create a seam. We measured and re-measured the necessary six inches to be discarded. Created the straight-line and…. paused.

We were NERVOUS about possibly destroying this beautiful mattress. But, deep breath, after discussion and reaffirmations, the cutting began. We replaced the mattress cover, secured the slack with Velcro attachments on the underside, and voila! We have an appropriately-sized mattress that fit into our RV – phew!!
